Ingredients

  • This gives the cake structure—a sift ensures a fluffier crumb and avoids lumps.
  • They make the cake rise tall; fresh leaveners are crucial for a light, airy texture.
  • Just enough enhances the vanilla and balances the sweetness—never skip it.
  • Room temperature butter whips smoothly and brings rich flavor to both the cake and buttercream.
  • Creaming the sugar into the butter until pale is essential for a tender cake.
  • Adding them one at a time keeps the batter silky and prevents curdling.
  • Pure vanilla tastes better—sometimes I add a splash more for extra warmth.
  • Room temperature ensures the batter stays smooth and combines evenly.
  • Sifted for lump-free buttercream that feels as smooth as velvet.
  • These add cheer—choosing the right ones becomes a fun family debate.
  • Optional, but perfect if you want to match school colors.

03 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
04 ¼ cup whole milk, room temperature
05 Pinch of salt

01 Graduation-themed sprinkles or edible decorations
02 Gel food coloring (optional)

How To Make It

Step 01

Prepare Baking Pan: Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line a 12x18-inch sheet pan with parchment paper.

Step 02

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 03

Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and granulated sugar together with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.

Step 04

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.

Step 05

Combine Ingredients: Add half of the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix on low speed. Pour in half the milk and mix gently. Repeat with remaining dry ingredients and milk, mixing just until combined.

Step 06

Fill Pan: Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly using a spatula.

Step 07

Bake the Cake: Bake for 28-32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Step 08

Cool: Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

Step 09

Make Buttercream: Beat butter until creamy, about 2 minutes. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low. Add vanilla extract, milk, and salt. Beat on high for 2-3 minutes until fluffy. Add gel food coloring if desired.

Step 10

Frost Cake: Spread buttercream evenly over the cooled cake.

Step 11

Decorate: Apply graduation-themed sprinkles or edible decorations as desired.

Step 12

Slice and Serve: Cut into portions and serve.
